Why Is Telegram Harder for Spammers?
Telegram’s recent anti-spam changes are less about one dramatic crackdown and more about a steady redesign of how strangers, group members, and suspicious accounts interact on the app. Over the last couple of years, Telegram has added paid message gates for unknown senders, a profile check screen before you reply to a new person, stronger moderation tools for group admins, clearer labels for scam or fake accounts, and a new frozen-account appeal flow for banned users. Taken together, these updates show a platform that still wants open communication, but no longer wants open season for spam floods, impersonation, and throwaway scam accounts.
A New Rule for Strangers: Access Is No Longer Free
One of the biggest changes arrived on March 7, 2025, when Telegram introduced Star Messages. Premium users can set a fee for incoming messages from people outside their contacts, and the same idea can also be used in groups and channel discussions. That matters because spam works best when sending a message costs nothing and reaches a huge number of people. Telegram’s new setup changes that math. A stranger can still contact you, but there is now friction, and friction is exactly what spam systems hate. Telegram also lets users create exceptions, so trusted people or members of specific groups can still message for free.
This shift is interesting because it does not block conversation outright. It sorts intent. A random scammer trying to hit thousands of inboxes now faces a cost barrier, while a real person with a valid reason to reach you still has a path in. For creators, public figures, and admins of busy communities, this turns inbox protection into a built-in feature instead of a constant manual cleanup job. It also gives Telegram a moderation tool that works before abuse starts, not only after users report it.
Telegram Now Shows More Clues Before You Reply
The same March 2025 update added Contact Confirmation, and this may be the most practical anti-scam tool for ordinary users. When someone outside your contacts messages you for the first time, Telegram now shows an info page before you reply. That page can show the sender’s country based on phone number, shared groups, when they joined Telegram, when they last changed a username or profile photo, and whether the account is official, third-party verified, or just a regular user. Those details help users catch classic fraud patterns such as fresh accounts, sudden identity swaps, and impersonation attempts.
That change is important because many suspicious accounts do not look suspicious in the first message. They often borrow a familiar name, a copied profile photo, or a fake sense of urgency. Contact Confirmation gives users context before the conversation gains momentum. In plain terms, Telegram moved part of spam defense from the moderation team to the chat screen itself. That is a smart move, because a warning shown at the start of a chat is far more useful than a punishment handed out after money or data is already gone.
Group Admins Have Sharper Tools Now
Telegram has also toughened group defense. In December 2022, it made aggressive anti-spam filtering available for large groups, bringing the platform’s own anti-spam tools into admin settings. Then on April 25, 2024, Telegram added mass moderation for groups, allowing admins to select several messages and apply multiple actions at once, with the option to restrict users instead of banning them on the spot. Admins of groups with 200 or more members can also enable aggressive spam filtering to automatically detect and restrict problematic users.
This matters because spam in groups is usually about speed. Attackers dump links, fake giveaways, crypto bait, or phishing copy into a chat before admins can react. Telegram’s newer admin tools cut that response time. Instead of removing one message and one account at a time, admins can act in batches and let automated filtering catch a share of the mess first. That makes large groups less attractive targets, since the payoff window for spammers gets much smaller.
Suspicious Accounts Now Face Clearer Warnings and Tighter Limits
Telegram’s policy language has also become more explicit. In its Digital Services Act guidance, Telegram says it can temporarily or permanently suspend parts of an account’s functionality, including the ability to contact people who likely do not know you or to create and participate in public communities. The same guidance says accounts, bots, and communities involved in impersonation or fraud can be marked with a FAKE or SCAM label on their public profile. Telegram also says critical restrictions require approval from a human moderator.
Another notable step came on April 30, 2025. Telegram said users who try to send scam or spam messages are quickly detected and banned through moderation tools and user reports, but instead of instantly logging every banned account out, some violators now get a frozen account state. In that mode, they cannot contact other users, but they can submit an appeal inside Telegram. This is a useful balance: suspicious activity gets stopped fast, while mistaken bans have a cleaner review path. Telegram also added an easier way to instantly block and report an unknown sender from the top of a chat.
The Back End Is Doing More Work Too
Behind the scenes, Telegram says its moderation has combined user reports with proactive machine-learning systems since 2015, and that this effort was strengthened in early 2024 with newer AI moderation tools. Telegram’s moderation overview says it blocks tens of thousands of groups and channels daily and removes millions of pieces of violating content. In 2025 alone, the moderation page reports more than 44 million blocked groups and channels. Those figures cover more than spam, but they show the scale of the enforcement system now sitting behind the app’s newer front-end safety features.
Telegram’s privacy policy adds another useful detail. It says the service may collect metadata such as IP address, devices used, and username change history to prevent spam, abuse, and terms violations. It also says moderators may review reported messages, that confirmed spam reports can limit an account from contacting strangers temporarily or permanently, and that automated algorithms may analyze messages in cloud chats to stop spam and phishing. So the anti-spam push is not only about what users can see. It also involves stronger detection signals working in the background.
What These Changes Really Mean
The bigger story is that Telegram is moving from reactive cleanup to layered prevention. Unknown senders can be slowed down with paid access. New chats now arrive with more identity clues. Group admins have better batch tools and aggressive filters. Scam and impersonation accounts can be visibly labeled. Suspicious users can lose the ability to reach strangers, and large-scale moderation now has more AI support behind it.
For regular users, that means Telegram still feels open, but less naive. For spammers, the platform has become more expensive, more visible, and easier to police. That is usually how abuse gets reduced in practice: not with one magic button, but with a chain of small barriers that make bad behavior slower, riskier, and less profitable. Telegram’s recent updates fit that pattern closely, and they suggest the app is trying to keep its scale without giving suspicious accounts the same freedom they enjoyed before.
